Broughton Hospital Historic Marker

Broughton Hospital is a state facility for the care of the mentally ill. It was opened
in 1883. And named in 1959 for J. Melville Broughton which was the governor
from 1941-1945.

The original marker was lost or misplaced when Hwy. 18 was
widened to a four-lane. I believe it was about the year 2000.
When I begin my search to record and photograph each of the
11 signs in Burke County I could not find the Broughton Hospital
Historic Marker. I contacted the North Carolina Highway Historical Maker
Program to see if they knew it was. They did not.
After calling Broughton Hospital, the local state maintenance department
and the maintenance department in Asheville, N. C. I was able to locate
the sign. They put the sign up in December of 2006. A lone lost sign
put back to where it belonged. All eleven signs are now up and located.

You may see www.ncmarkers.com for more detail about the program.
